Fátima

in

Though a town, Fátima is best known for the catholic shrine it houses that is dedicated to the worship of the Virgin Mary. Catholics come from all over the world to pay homage to the legend that says in 1917, three children, or shepherds if one believes a slightly different version, witnessed apparitions of her, the last of which is believed to have been a miracle witnessed by thousands and is referred to as “the day the sun danced”

Visitors to this town undoubtedly come to see the shrine and can visit the houses of those who saw the apparitions. There are monuments all over the town that pay homage to these events and the town is always filled with devout Christians.

It is also a fantastic place from which to explore the surroundingSerras da Aire e Candeeiros, surrounding mountains that are full of limestone and great to trek through. Its Moorish green-towered castle is an interesting building and was taken over by the Christians when Fátima was conquered in 1148 by Afonso Henriques meaning it is an interesting architectural mix. It was rebuilt in 1450 and now houses exhibitions.
