Lisboa | Welcome to Lisboa
Elegant and historic, but with a huge selection of bars, clubs and nightlife, Lisbon is undoubtedly one of Europe's liveliest, hippest cities. Built on the seven hills of the River Tagus, the Portuguese capital looks stunning from every angle. It's a seductive, romantic city with mazes of cobbled streets and charming tiled buildings, that's easy to explore on foot or by traditional funiculars. The great Portuguese explorers established Lisbon as one of the world's most important ports, the centre of an empire that stretched from Brazil in the west to India and Macao in the East. The Mosteiro dos Jerónimos in the district of Belém is a stone tribute to Portugal's maritime heritage, while the Torre de Belém symbolizes Portugal's great era of expansion. The maritime theme has even been incorporated into contemporary architecture - the amazing new Vasco da Gama bridge is in the shape of a giant sail.
